Sacramento Theatre Company is proud to kick off the 2019-2020 75th Anniversary season of Decades, Divas & Diamonds by presenting an original adaptation of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey written by STC favorite, Carissa Meagher. This is Meagher’s first time writing for STC and she hopes that audiences will leave the show with “a great reminder to lift our heads from our books (or our phones, the news, computers) and really connect with the world around us, without immediately supposing the worst in others or ourselves.”
Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey follows the story of Catherine Morland, an unlikely heroine. With a great affinity for gothic novels, Miss Morland approaches situations with a skewed sense of reality, and is constantly aware of the terrors that could be lurking around every corner. This tendency leads to trouble when Miss Morland is invited for a stay at Northanger Abbey, the dark and mysterious home of the Tilney family. Miss Morland, meanwhile, is falling further in love with the youngest son of the family, Mr. Henry Tilney, causing trouble when she grows suspicious of his father and the dark history the house may hold.
STC’s first production will welcome home Olivia Stevenson, who is a graduate of STC’s Young Professionals Conservatory. Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey will include Jane Austen as a role in the cast, and Stevenson will be leading the production playing the dual role of Catherine Morland/Jane Austen. The production also features James Edwards as Henry Tilney, Jonathan Williams as General Tilney, and Mike DiSalvo as John Thorpe/Captain Tilney. The production is directed by Teresa Stirling-Forsyth. The design team includes Jarrod Bodensteiner (set), Isaiah Leeper (lighting), and Jessica Minnihan (costumes).
