Synopsis

STC’s Cabaret Series consists of three professionally-produced Cabarets each year, in which the Main Stage Lobby is transformed into a wonderful performance venue, with seating for up to 120 guests at candlelit tables. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxing. Beer and wine is available, as are light appetizers of fruit, cheese, and desserts.

Florenz Ziegfeld

Florenz Ziegfeld

The first cabaret of the season pays tribute to Florenz Ziegfeld, one of the fathers of the modern musical. Broadway, as we know it, would not be the same without Ziegfeld’s blend of sophistication, scandal, and spectacle. Most famous for his revues and promotional genius, Ziegfeld blended drama, comedy, music, and (above all) beautiful women.

Although he himself was not a performer or a musician, Ziegfeld produced some of the most memorable stage productions of the early 1900s, including Show Boat, The Parisian Model, and, of course, The Ziegfeld Follies.

Act One of STC’s A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody spotlights the songs of the original Ziegfeld Follies from such composers as Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. Act Two features songs from more recent Broadway shows that look back on this iconic era and on Ziegfeld’s legend, such as Stephen Sondheim’s Follies, Jule Styne’s Funny Girl, and more.

The cast of six features STC Cabaret Series favorites Miranda D. Lawson and Jacob Montoya, new faces to the Cabaret Stage, Danielle DeBow and Hilary Owen, and STC Young Professionals Conservatory student Noa Solorio. As is tradition, Executive Producing Director Michael Laun makes a cameo or two. Samuel Clein (piano) and Elaine Lord (percussion) accompany the soloists, with choreography by Jacob Montoya and Nicole Sterling.
